Position: Maintenance Technician III (Full-Time)

Salary Range:  $32,000.00 - $52,000.00 depending on skill level, plus benefits.

Job Summary:  Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time mechanic position within the Fleet Division. This position is responsible for repairs and daily maintenance of the agency fleet and related equipment. Must be able to perform a variety of automobile repair and preventative maintenance tasks to include, diagnostics, engine analysis, tune ups, tire changes/rotations, tire mount and balance, replacing brakes, replacing belts, hoses and climate control A/C system repair.

Work Schedule:  40-hour position, working day shift Monday through Friday and On-Call

Duties & Essential Functions:

  • Troubleshoot and repair various types of vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance.
  • Inspect and adjust equipment used in performance of duties.
  • May perform emergency road servicing, changing flat tires, replacing batteries, performing battery jumps
  • Transport vehicles and equipment to various locations, such as dealerships, repair shops.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Have knowledge of basic engine components, materials, tools and methods used in the repair, maintenance & servicing of a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of troubleshooting techniques and methods.
  • Some knowledge of parts requirements including ordering and recording.
  • Skill in the use of shop tools and ability to operate shop equipment.
  • Ability to understand and perform diagnostic testing.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain maintenance records.
  • Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area

      Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed in a variety of environmental conditions, indoors and out, and may include exposure to all types of conditions, with noise, vibrations, fumes, odors and dust, and may work for periods in hot, cold, wet or dry weather and high winds. May have exposure to chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Must possess: strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate a variety of tools and equipment, and to safely operate a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and distinguish colors in wiring; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity needed to access, enter, and to operate tools and equipment. Will be required to bend, kneel and crouch. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment. May be required occasionally to work in a seated position, able to stand for long periods of time, climb or balance. Must be able to respond to call-outs and emergencies after regular working hours and on weekends and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or varying shifts. Must possess the stamina to work long hours and overtime, if necessary.

Required Minimum Education & Experience:

  • A high school diploma or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Must have two years verifiable experience in automobile repair and maintaining mechanical equipment
  • Years of Experience can be substituted for certifications in the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) course series

  • Physical/medical evaluation is required
  • Pass a background investigation and drug test, including but not limited to; no felony convictions; no misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement; no misdemeanor conviction of domestic violence; no dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Driving history will be thoroughly reviewed and may be grounds for disqualification.
