Safe Schools

Captain Jeremy Johnston

The Safe School Division and the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officers are tasked with the security of Wakulla County school campuses and ensuring the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office follows all applicable state laws regarding school safety.  SRO’s are on school campuses daily ensuring the safety and security of the students and staff at each school.  SRO’s are tasked with the security of many school functions both on and off campus as requested by Wakulla County school administration.  SRO’s also take great effort every day to develop positive relationships with the students of Wakulla County.

SROs have been involved in school bus stop checks and they monitor the bus radio channel to respond to bus drivers who may have an issue with students. The district also has experienced deputies who have been assigned as SROs in past years who can step into the role if one of the regular SROs is out of the school for a day or two.

The WCSO and school district will be continuing the partnership established by Sheriff Jared Miller and Superintendent Pearce which has included seat belt checks at the high school, bicycle safety rodeos, Teen Driver Challenge, paid and volunteer staff serving as security for sporting events such as football games at middle school and high school levels, Project Graduation, SAVE programs, taking students to the hospital for mental health issues and traffic control at large event such as high school graduation.

Major Jeremy Johnston is the head of the Safe Schools Division and the School Resource Officer program.
