Sheriff's Log March 5 to March 11  E-mail

On March 7, Stephen Dell Spears, 25, of Crawfordville was charged with cruelty to animals after Deputy Jerry Morgan responded to a complaint with the Wakulla County Animal Control unit. The deputy observed a dog limping with duct tape covering two front feet. Animal Control noted that the owner allegedly kicking it might have caused the injuries to the dog. The animal was turned over to Animal Control for treatment of injuries.
On March 6, Safety Officer Jim Griner of the Wakulla School District reported a burglary at the Wakulla Education Center. A broken window was observed in the kitchen area, but nothing was taken. Deputy Jerry Morgan investigated.
On March 5, Kelli Revell of the Kangaroo Express at 3180 Coastal Highway reported a criminal mischief as someone painted obscenities on the side of the building. Lt. Ray Johnson investigated.
On March 5, Christy Noftz of Crawfordville reported a residential burglary. Two satellite receivers were removed from her home. The value of the missing property is $800.  Deputy Wil Raker investigated.
On March 5, Ivanhoe L. Carroll of the Wakulla County Animal Shelter reported the theft of a live animal trap. The trap had been loaned to a Crawfordville resident and was valued at $350. Lt. C.L. Morrison investigated.
On March 4, Robert Alan Lindsey, 22, of Crawfordville was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to sell following a traffic stop. Suspect cocaine was discovered inside the vehicle along with $100. The weight of the cocaine was .8 grams. Deputy Nick Boutwell, Lt. Danny Harrell and Deputy Ian Richards investigated.
On March 6, Margaret J. Matheson of Crawfordville reported a possible fraud and identity theft. She was informed that a Nikon camera had been delivered to her home. However, the victim never ordered the camera. The express company came back to the victim’s home and picked up the camera to deliver it to another address. Captain Steve Ganey investigated.
On March 8, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Wakulla Emergency Management Director Scott Nelson assisted William Morris Brown of Crawfordville clean up a gasoline spill at Triangle Petro in Medart. Brown accidentally put the gas hose into a rod holder rather than the gasoline port.
Brown pumped 25 gallons of gasoline before realizing his mistake. He opened the drain plug to keep the electric bilge from turning on. The spilled materials were cleaned up before they could drain into a nearby holding pond. Deputies Dale Evans and Ben Steinle investigated with Deputy Nathan Taylor.
On March 8, Joseph A. Deas of Jennings and Anderson Columbia Company reported a grand theft of casings and an attempted theft from a toolbox at a construction site at the Wakulla River. Six-inch casing sticks were stolen from a trailer. The value of the stolen items was $15,000 and the damage to the toolbox was $100. Deputy Evelyn Brown investigated.
On March 9, a 49-year-old Crawfordville man was charged with battery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and burglary with assault or battery in connection with a domestic disturbance at the home of his wife. His wife was visiting with a 48-year-old friend when the suspect arrived at the home, stormed past his wife into the home and struck his wife’s friend with a baseball bat. The victim was struck in the head and Deputy Nathan Taylor contacted emergency medical services to treat him. Lt. Danny Harrell also investigated.
On March 9, William C. Anderson of Crawfordville reported the loss of his wallet at Wal-Mart. The victim placed the wallet on a counter and did not remember leaving his wallet until he went to the check out line. The value of the wallet and contents was listed at $378. Lt. Brad Taylor investigated.
On March 9, James W. Smith of Crawfordville reported the theft of livestock. The victim reported the loss of seven goats from his pen. The goats are valued at $350. Deputy Billy Metcalf investigated.
On March 10, Det. Bruce Ashley, Captain Steve Ganey, Det. Drew Vass and Deputy Wil Raker investigated a residential structure fire. The house fire appeared to have started in a dresser at a home owned by Timothy D. Goodwin of Crawfordville. One of the occupants rescued a small dog from inside the home. Wakulla County Firefighters put out the fire. Damage to the dresser and contents were estimated at $2,500.

During the week, the sheriff’s office responded to 11 business and residential alarms; 264 calls that did not require investigation; 11 family disturbances; 17 faulty equipment stops; filed 11 intelligence reports; 14 medical assistances; 14 assistances for other agencies in the county; 83 service assistance for legal advice; 44 assistance to motorists; 29 speeding stops; 25 suspicious activity; 10 thefts; 59 traffic offenses; 16 abandoned vehicles; 12 warrants served; 303 watch orders for extra patrol; and a grand total of 1,023 calls.
