A delegation from the African nation of Ethiopia visited the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, Feb. 16 to discuss emergency management issues with Wakulla Emergency Management Director Scott Nelson. The large delegation filled the Wakulla Emergency Operations Center as Nelson described how Wakulla County officials address emergency needs and planning. “They have many of the same concerns we have,” said Nelson. “They also have famine issues.” The Ethiopian delegation also visited the Leon County Emergency Operations Center and state operations. The trip was coordinated by the U.S. Forest Service. The focus of Nelson’s discussion was “how we meet the emergency needs locally.” Some of the areas of concern for the African nation, in addition to famine, included floods and drought. Nelson’s presentation described how Wakulla County, as a small, rural operation, plans for potential disaster. “It went well,” Nelson concluded. “I think they enjoyed it.”
