|New LED WCSO lighting will save on energy costs|
WCSO maintenance staff has been erecting new energy efficient LED lighting around the jail and WCSO complex. Each of the 27 lighting units costs $200 but they are expected to pay for themselves in electrical savings in 14 months.
The LED or Light Emitting Diode fixtures use one-third less electrical power and turn on and off automatically based on the lighting level outside. They replace original incandescent lighting fixtures that were erected when the WCSO facility was built. The older fixtures are more expensive to operate and have become outdated.
The new light fixtures provide the same amount of light as the old units but do it with only 45 watts rather than 250 watts. LED lighting changes inside the building have already resulted in electrical savings of $1,000 per month.
Some of the advantages of the LED fixtures are lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, smaller size and improved performance. Sheriff Charlie Creel approved the project as a way to continue to cut costs and save taxpayers money. Pictured: an old unit is pictured on the ground next to a new smaller lighting unit.
