|WCSO escorts Smith Creek School to new home|
The historic Smith Creek school house, estimated at between 85 and 100 years old, made the long trip from Smith Creek to the Wakulla County Historical Society Heritage Village in Crawfordville on Monday, Feb. 4.
The historical society will eventually restore the building and open it to the public on the Heritage Village site off Zion Hill Road.
The building left Smith Creek at 8:30 a.m. and arrived at the village at 1 p.m. after following a route through the Apalachicola National Forest, Highway 267 and U.S. Highway 319.
During the movement of the school house, power lines were lifted so that the building could pass through. The traffic lights at Highway 267 and U.S. Highway 319 were also lifted out of the way.
The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office escorted the building moving contractor along with members of the Historical Society.
