VOLUNTARY EVACUATION OF LOW LYING AREAS
*****************VOLUNTARY EVACUATION OF LOW LYING AREAS*******************************
*************************************************************************************************************
The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office, Division of Emergency Management in coordination with County Administration is recommending a voluntary evacuation of low lying coastal areas and areas in St. Marks and Mashes Sands. The National Weather Service is projecting up to four feet of tidal surge Saturday night. This level of surge is anticipated to cause flooding in the immediate coastal areas of St. Marks and Mashes Sands and up to 1-mile up the St. Marks, Wakulla and Ochlocknee rivers. We are also issuing a voluntary evacuation for interests along the St. Marks River and Sopchoppy River. The National Weather Service is projecting moderate river flooding along the St. Marks River and major flooding along the Sopchoppy River. Many low lying homes will be flooded or surrounded by water along the Sopchoppy River; many secondary roads will be flooded. We are encouraging residents in these areas to take steps to protect property and to evacuate. Also they are forecasting flooding county-wide in flood prone areas; we are recommending evacuations from these areas as well. All persons with interests in these areas should take necessary precautions to protect life and property. We would like to remind you to avoid driving through flood waters. A shelter is currently open at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3251 Crawfordville Highway. If you have any questions or need assistance with evacuations, please contact the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office at 850.926.0800.
