Animal Shelter and Harley Davidson Motocycle
As you may be aware, the Wakulla County Animal Shelter comes under the responsibility of the Sheriff=s Office. The responsibility is often difficult, but also rewarding. Last year we were able to adopt 603 animals, though unfortunately we had to euthanize 1,780.
We are joining in a campaign to raise money for the non-profit organization Citizens for Human Animal Treatment of Wakulla, C.H.A.T. C.H.A.T. helps us in many ways. They serve as an educational group to teach pet responsibility and also pay for medication, food, and other necessities for shelter animals.
To help C.H.A.T., we are selling 3,000 - $20 tickets on a Harley Davidson Soft Tail Motorcycle donated at cost by Capital City Harley-Davidson, valued at $20,000, which could raise as much as $30,000 if we are successful.
We know in law enforcement that animal cruelty and family violence all to often are related and that children who witness animal cruelty often repeat this behavior toward animals and humans.
Also, it is not unusual for us to go to the scene of a domestic violence situation where we make an arrest, take the spouse and children to a safe house and then we learn that there are animals at the residence that are uncared for and have to be taken to the shelter.
I hope you can help us by buying a ticket for the drawing on the Harley Davidson motorcycle, to be held November 10, at the Mighty Martime Festival in Panacea.
To purchase a ticket you may stop by the Sheriff=s Office, Animal Shelter or mail a check payable to C.H.A.T., 15 Oak Street, Crawfordville, Florida 32327. For more information you may call 850/926-0805.
