The Community Services Unit provides direct and optimal levels of services to the citizens of Wakulla County to ensure the safety of county residents and their communities. Community Affairs and Crime Prevention programs, working with neighborhood leaders,  encourage citizens to become involved in crime prevention in their neighborhoods.

Numerous crime prevention programs are functioning within the Sheriff’s Office including:

  • Child Identi-Kit - The Child Identi-Kit program is designed to photo identify the children of Wakulla County to serve as a clearing house of information on missing and exploited children. This provides technical assistance to citizens of Wakulla County, and helps ensure the safety and protection of our children. Anyone interested in the program may contact Major Larry Massa (850) 926-0821.
  • Business Watch - to strengthen lines of communications between local businesses and law enforcement.
  • Neighborhood Crime Watch - The Community Policing Division works with neighborhoods leaders to establish Neighborhood Watches in various neighborhoods throughout the County. Major Larry Massa meets with neighborhood citizens to give them information to help their neighborhoods protect themselves. Block Captains are assigned throughout the neighborhoods to establish a network with the citizens. We ask that you take this concept to the extreme by keeping your eyes and ears open for any suspicious activities in your neighborhood. We encourage you to report anything to your Sheriff's Office that doesn't seem right to you, and please always be prepared in the event of an emergency.
  • Operation Life Saver - This program was implemented to help locate, identify, and return disoriented Alzheimer's Disease patients to their familiar home environments. Participants in this program are issued bracelets with an assigned number engraved that is identifiable by area law enforcement. There is no charge for this program. For more information concerning this program, please contact Captain Randall Taylor at (850) 926-0800.
  • Kid’s Safety Day - Kid's Safety Day is an annual event, usually held in the Spring. Educational booths are set up by local, state, and federal agencies to help teach safety. Last year approximately 300 children were in attendance. The Florida Park Patrol along with a local law firm gave bicycle helmets to all children who attended.
  • Kid's Fishing Tournament
  • Animal Shelter

Animal Shelter

The Wakulla Animal Shelter began operation in May 1993. Ms. Ivanhoe Carroll serves as Director of Animal Control and you can reach her at (850) 926-0902 for more information, visit the Animal Control Page .

An average of 120 dogs and cats can be housed at the shelter. Sadly, some of these animals have to be euthanized. Every animal admitted to the shelter receives medical care, a warm safe environment in which to heal and learn to trust, and much love to aid in preparation for becoming adoptable. The programs are made possible by the county and caring people who provide funding which keeps the doors open.

Citizens Police Academy

The Community Law Enforcement Academy offers citizens the opportunity to learn how law enforcement can make a difference in the safety of their own neighborhoods, and how working together with law enforcement can improve crime prevention techniques. Citizens are able to express to Sheriff Harvey what they think of the Sheriff's Office response to their needs and to the public safety needs of the County as a whole. This interaction helps to produce the knowledge and understanding in both citizens and law enforcement for continual improvement in programs and policies to enhance the quality of life for all. Highlights of the Academy include patrol ride-alongs with deputies and firearms training. For more information on the Community Law Enforcement Academy, contact Major Larry Massa, (850) 926-0821.
